Bethlehem Pastor receives top award from German Muslim institute

November 13, 2006

Bethlehem - Ma'an - The Central Institute of Islamic Archives has selected the winners of its annual award. The winners included Bishop Dr Mitry Ar-Rahib, the pastor of the Nativity Church in Bethlehem.

The Islamic Archives Institution is the oldest Muslim body in Germany, and is responsible for directing the largest collection of Islamic archives; over a million manuscripts are held there, since its establishment in 1927. Dr Mitry Ar-Rahib was chosen to receive "the Muhammad Nafi' Shalaby award for journalism" for his role in inter-religious dialogue, and for calling for reconciliation in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

This is the first time the award has been given to an Arab Christian figure from the Middle East. Dr Ar-Rahib was unable to travel to Germany to receive the award, and so it was collected on his behalf by Professor Erica Petsman.
