Former EAPPI Coordinator wins prestigious Social Justice Award from Brandeis University

The Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI)

May 26, 2005

Catherine Nichols, who served the EAPPI as interim Programme Coordinator from April through November 2004, was honored as one of two recipients of the Bailis Family Social Justice Award at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University (United States).

Said Nichols: “Although all work for social change takes years to see results, and often runs into serious hurdles that prohibit measurable success, I appreciate the opportunity that this award offers to recognize efforts to create a more compassionate and just society.”

Salpy Eskidjian, who was the EAPPI’s International Programme Coordinator during Nichols’ time with the programme, praised her efforts: “Catherine served the programme tirelessly…and was appreciated by the WCC, the EAPPI members, Church leaders in Jerusalem, as well as volunteers who joined the programme, and all local partners, both Palestinian and Israeli, for her staunch commitment to the programme and what it stands for, as well as for her efforts to ensure the programme was on track.”

Nichols is continuing her work in the area of social justice, having returned full-time to the Sabeel Ecumenical Center for Liberation Theology in Jerusalem, a local partner organization of the EAPPI.

The Susan and Lawrence Bailis Family Social Justice Award was instituted in 2003 at the Heller School of Brandeis University in honor of the commitment of the Bailis family to social justice issues. The late Susan Bailis chaired the Heller School Board of Overseers until her death in 2000. Lawrence Bailis, a faculty member at the Heller School, is a researcher whose work in community-building sensitized him to the importance of highlighting this issue at his school, whose mission is to use knowledge in order to advance social justice.
