HR Organisation Appeals to EU to Retract its Policy Imposing Blockade, Starvation on Palestinians
Human Rights Organisation
June 5, 2006

The Vienna based Friends of Humanity International (Human Rights Organisation) appealed Tuesday to the European Union to retract its policy imposing blockade and starvation on Palestinian people.

In an open letter to the Presidency of the Council of the European Union Federal Chancellor of Austria Mr Wolfgang Schüssel, Friends of Humanity International said the siege of a people under occupation is a grave unprecedented incident and deviation from the established human, moral and juristic paradigms.

The letter reads:

Friends of Humanity International observes with concern the developments associated with the punitive measures imposed by the European Union States on the Palestinian party following the results of the free elections that took place last January on the Palestinian lands.

Friends of Humanity is stunned by such excessive measure which are taken at a time the Palestinian people continue to suffer from the oppression of occupation, the confiscation of their lands and deprivation of their basic rights.

Instead of placing the Palestinian people under boycott and sanction, the European Union should have encouraged the proceeding of the elections on the Palestinian lands, thus contribute to laying the foundation for just social and economic norms and criteria.

The European Union should have taken into consideration the responsibilities entrusted to its member states towards preventing the aggravation of the Palestinian people's suffering. The Union was expected to stand by the Palestinian people and support their endeavor to regain their rights and to lead a decent and secure living on their homeland, just as the case for the other peoples of the world.

It would have been more appropriate for the States of the European Union to have considered a certain action to oblige the Israeli Government to eradicate the discriminative segregation wall which isolates the Palestinian residential areas, an aggression which ought not be tolerated or permitted in the twenty first century.

It is a painful fact for justice defenders and seekers that this internationally condemned wall still stands erect on the Palestinian land, that more walls are being inflicted, under whatsoever pretexts, on the Palestinian citizens and their medical and educations institutions, ranging from the economic sanction to the living punitive measures and political isolation.

Founded on moral base, juristic perspective as well as human concern, Friends of Humanity International assert that the imposition of sanction and punition on the Palestinian people, and tightening the grip on the already deteriorating living opportunities available to the Palestinian citizens, can in no way stand for justice and is far from being the right way applied to mange relationships among the world's peoples.

The imposition of sanctions on a people under occupation represents a grave unprecedented event ever witnessed on the arena of the international relations, and a regrettable deviation from the human and moral norms and the principles of human rights.

Friends of Humanity express its astonishment at the excuses being pronounced in justification of this policy, and confirm that such excuses are not only irrelevant but also contradictory and ungrounded.

Imposition of drastic living pressures and constriction on the chances of obtaining food and medication is not the logic means to prompt any party whatsoever to adopt stands that are consistent with the convictions and norms.

In this respect, Friends of Humanity would stress the fact that the donations provided by the Europeans are part of their vowed commitments. Retraction of any of these commitments is regarded as a systematic intentional damage inflicted on the Palestinian people at a time such commitments pose a duty dictated by the human, moral and historical responsibility towards the Palestinian People, particularly on the part of the European countries and the United States of America that have contributed to a vast extent to the rise and continuity of the agony of the Palestinians.

Friends of Humanity International warn against using development projects for political aims or manipulating them in biased policies. The Organisation assert that such attitude involves a conflict to the spirit of the developmental responsibility undertaken by the industrial states, and is considered a violation of the values underpinning the policies relating to development cooperation.

Friends of Humanity International express its absolute rejection of the policy of siege, sanction and famishment which has been recently imposed on the Palestinian people, and hold all concerned parties fully responsible for the harm sustained by the Palestinian citizens as a result of such policy which would eventually lead to the demolition of the Palestinians' economic infrastructure.

Friends of Humanity demands immediate retraction of such grave biased policies, by way of invalidating all forms of boycott and sanction. Moreover, the Organisation calls the European Union to participate in vitalizing and reviving the Palestinian economy, and to rescue it from the Israeli occupation domination.
